SOBRE LA PLANTA VETIVER
La variedad cultivada de Vetiveria zizanioides, con su centro de origen en el sur de la India, no es fértil, no invasiva, y tiene que ser propagada por la división de las raíces. En 1999, sin embargo, se produjo un cambio en el nombre botánico de todo Vetiveria en Chrysopogon. Esto ha dado lugar a un nuevo nombre científico de la hierba vetiver como Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty.
Vetiver Grass is the key element in a low cost and efficient system, used in nearly 100 countries for soil and water conservation, infrastructure stabilization, pollution control, waste water treatment, mitigation and rehabilitation, sediment control, prevention of storm damage and many other environmental protection applications (through bioengineering and phytoremediation).
The cultivated variety of Vetiveria zizanioides, with its center of origin in southern India, is non-fertile, non-nvasive, and has to be propagated by clump subdivision. In 1999, however, there was a change of the botanic name of all Vetiveria into Chrysopogon. This has given rise to a new scientific name of the Vetiver Grass as Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty.
SOBRE EL SISTEMA VETIVER
La base del Sistema Vetiver es que cuando el pasto vetiver se siembra como un seto a través de una pendiente, este forma una barrera muy densa que reduce la velocidad y dispersa la escorrentía. El pasto vetiver tiene además un sistema de raíces muy profundo y fuerte, una amplia gama de tolerancia de pH de aproximadamente pH 3 a pH 11, una alta tolerancia a los metales pesados, una capacidad de eliminar del agua y del suelo grandes cantidades de exceso de nitratos, fosfatos y de productos químicos agrícolas, y un atributo de esterilidad y no invasividad.
Con esto, tenemos una planta que, con algunas modificaciones en su aplicación, puede ser utilizada para la conservación de suelos y agua, estabilización de obras de ingeniería, control de la contaminación (humedales), y otros usos donde el suelo y el agua se unen.
The very basis of The Vetiver System is that when Vetiver grass is planted as a hedgerow across a slope, it forms a very dense barrier that slows down and spreads rainfall runoff. Vetiver grass also has a very deep and strong root system, a wide range of pH tolerance from about pH 3 to pH 11, a high tolerance to most heavy metals, an ability to remove from soil and water large quantities of excess nitrates, phosphates and farm chemicals, and an attribute of sterility and non-invasiveness.
With this, we have a plant that, with some modifications to its application, can be used for soil and water conservation, engineered construction site stabilization, pollution control (constructed wetlands), and most other uses where soil and water come together.
